LED grow lights are created from LEDs, or light-emitting diodes. They utilize electronic semiconductor diodes that, when turned on, create electroluminescence, which is energy released as light. The light is seen by the eye as having different color spectrums, ranging from red to blue, and colors in between. Because the LEDs are very small, they utilize optical elements to aid in reflection as well as shape the light pattern.

A led grow light is an electric lamp designed to promote plant growth by emitting an electromagnetic spectrum appropriate for photosynthesis. The emitted light spectrum is similar to that from the sun, allowing indoor growth with outdoor conditions. Natural daylight has a high color temperature (approx. 6000 K) and appears bluish. Through the use of the color rendering index, it is possible to compare how much the lamp matches the natural color of regular sunlight.

LED lighting and how it is used in indoor gardening applications

Many newcomers to indoor growing might not understand that grow lights also must mimic the hours of the night. Plants are a lot more intelligent than many people would think. Every little action a plant takes happens in accordance to the sun. To do well at growing plants indoors, you should be aware of the necessity of night and day to your crop.

Grow lights have been used for many years in the commercial greenhouse industry as supplemental lighting for crops. Grow lights can assist at every stage of a plants life cycle. Grow lights can be used to increase the strength and health of seedlings and clones as well as a supplement to the natural light given by the sun, which aids in increased yields and better over all results. The High Intensity Discharge grow lights and T5 fluorescent grow tubes can even be used to grow plants without any help from the sun at all.

Plant lights use special types of light bulbs, usually fluorescent, halide, high pressure sodium, or LED, which are different from incandescent or compact fluorescent light bulbs. Grow lights are also known as grow lamps. Grow lamp bulbs emit either cool or warm light. Cool light, which is primarily in the blue spectrum, is good for promoting foliage growth; whereas warm light, primarily in the orange spectrum, is good for producing flowers and fruit. Plants do not actually use the entire spectrum of the sun''s light, only the red/orange and blue ranges are necessary.

LED Plant Lights

LED panels have no ballasts to burn out like other plant lights. They do not run hot, just warm. LED bulbs last up to 50,000 hours and are recyclable after they finally die out. LED plant lights deliver light that is perfect for your plants, but relatively dim to people. Your plants get only the light that they really need.

High Intensity Discharge grow lights are probably the most popular grow lights on the market today for indoor gardening. These grow lights are what are used by most commercial growers with large scale greenhouse operations. High Pressure Sodium, and Metal Halide Bulbs are the best HID Lamps for mimicking the specific light spectrums that plants use to grow.

For better plant growth, cost effectiveness and ease of use, the LED grow light offers it all to the indoor gardener.

Other advantages of having LED grow lights are that they are long lasting since there isn't a filament in it, and that they don't become overheated when in constant use. Just let it shine and watch the magic unfold!
